Hammurabi was born around 1810 BC in the Mesopotamian city-state of Babylon. His father, Sin-Muballit, was king of Babylon. When Hammurabi became eighteen, his father became ill and he died. Hammurabi was crowned king of the city-state of Babylon. He vastly improved Babylon by establishing treaties and he worked to improve the defenses and infrastructure of the city. A few years later, Elam sieged war on Babylon and Hammurabi crushed them! After conquering Larsa he moved north and conquered the rest of Mesopotamia. Even after conquering Mesopotamia he still didn’t feel like he was done so he built new canals, aqueducts, and temples. He also developed a set of laws called the Code of Hammurabi. These laws were carved into stone columns called stelae that everyone could read. The laws and their punishments were equal, for example, “An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth”. |
